The 2013 Les Hautes Chèvres, however, has become a pure Pinot Meunier Champagne from plots planted in 1930 and 1971. This is already clear on the nose, where the finest notes of citrus fruits and red, acidic berries meet lime and dry herbs.

Nose

Vincent Laval has been revered by champagne purists for many years. The 2013s Les Hautes Chèvres shows why this is so. The champagne is a terroir wine par excellence. Old, even oldest Pinot Meunier vines, deeply rooted in the Argilo-Calcaire soil above the Marne, provide intensity and purism that are second to none. This is already evident on the nose, where the finest notes of citrus fruits and red, acidic berries meet lime and dry herbs.

Mouth

The palate reveals the extreme power and density of this champagne, but only with the help of a Burgundy swivel and with hours in the air. At the moment, this purist can be caraffed or put into the cellar for at least the next two to five years or even longer. If one gives him time and air, then he thanks this with a wonderful intensity of red currants, pomegranate and barberry, in addition something of pear, citrus fruit and dry herbs. The champagne is immensely complex, but above all pure, punchy with mercilessly fresh acidity and zero grams of dosage.
