The 2017 Laurenc from Pranzegg is dark-fruited and expansive, and smells from the goblet like flak lights shining into the evening sky in front of multi-purpose halls Plums, plum jam, blackberry jelly and mulberries fill its fruit basket and are complemented by hollyhocks and sloes in the top note. Above the Bolzano valley basin, Gojer's vineyards are farmed biodynamically by hand, and in the cellar, too, less is more Long fermentation and long maturation periods on the full lees with the addition of only small amounts of sulphur characterise the wines, which are always bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The Pranzegg winery is named after the estate where Martin Gojer has been producing his wines since 2009 as a reflection of their origin, the vintage and the family's way of life.

The 2017 Laurenc, pronounced Lauzen

z

This wine comes from the Lagrein vines that round out the farm. Harvested early, it lay on the mash for a month and was fermented together with its crests. The marc cap was always covered to ensure a gentle tannin yield. The Laurenc spent two years in large wood before maturing for a further eight months in the bottle.

Color

Dark purple with a violet fading rim and black core.

Nose

The 2017 Laurenc from Pranzegg is dark-fruited and expansive, and smells from the goblet like flak spotlights shining into the evening sky in front of multipurpose halls. Plums, plum jam, blackberry jelly and mulberries fill its fruit basket and are complemented by hollyhocks and sloes in the top note. Distinctively spicy and smoky notes of black walnuts, allspice and black pepper provide aromatic counterpoints.

Mouth

The force of the nose is dramatically slimmed down on the palate with a ravishing stature. The tannins line the palate as if with violet panne velvet, tightly meshed and polished, they remind us a little of rhubarb with their fine astringency. Animating and fine-grained like sandpaper, they envelop the fresh and juicy tart fruit. Spicy notes of leather and dark tobacco nestle against the tannins in the finish and accompany it into the fruity, spicy finale.

Food recommendations from Sebastian Bordthäuser

  • Smoked beetroot from the smoker with goat sour cream and roasted walnuts
  • Eel braised in red wine with prunes
  • Braised leg of hare with red cabbage and chestnuts
