Together with René Barbier and Alvaro Palacios, Daphne Glorian is part of the triumvirate of pioneers of what is now the greatness of Priorat wines. Clos Erasmus became famous. In the late 1980ies, Glorian founded Clos I Terrasses, and from the very beginning, she focused on biodynamic cultivation. The Cuvée Laurel consists of mainly Grenache Noir as well as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is aged in used wood and amphorae.
Color
Dark purple in colour with a violet rim and opaque core, the wine shows clearly and brilliantly in the glass.
Nose
Deep and, despite its youth, very generous, the 2018 Laurel of Clos I Terrasses shows on the nose. Dark fruit reminds of cranberries and cranberries united with dried and boiled black cherries. In addition, there is the spice of black tea, delicately smoked duck breast and the aroma of cocoa beans suggesting sweetness, as well as a hint of amaretto.
Changing in many layers, it makes you want to take the first sip.
Palate
Full and pronounced in its dark berry fruit but just as consistently dry, this proud Catalan from Gratallops appears on the palate. An invigorating acidity gives the quite tannic body of this wine freedom of movement as well as surefootedness and brings it into balance. Time and air bring its still untamed power into a balanced rest; ergo, open and/or decant in time before enjoyment.
Best to hide it in the basement for a while, though.
