Wine information

Clos I Terrasses was founded in the late 1980s by Daphne Glorian in Gratallops, Priorat. Daphne Glorian belonged to that group of young winemakers at that time who rediscovered the Priorat and within a very short time vinified some of the best and most expensive red wines in Spain. Besides René Barbier's Clos Mogador, Costers del Siuranas Clos de l'Obac, Mas Martinets and Álvaro Palacios' l'Ermita it was Daphne Glorian's Clos Erasmuswhich quickly achieved cult status. Laurel - in German Laurel, is the English translation of the Greek name Daphne -and this wine is, if you will, the second wine to the Clos Erasmus. It is a cuvée of Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet, whose vines have been farmed biodynamically for a long time under the aegis of Ester Nin. The share of Grenache is around 75 %. In the cellar, the wine is aged in 20-hectolitre barrels, in old barriques and in clay amphorae for 18 months. Excessive extraction and pigéage are avoided.

Nose

It is fascinating how transparent and pleasantly cool the Laurel is in the fragrance. Ripe cherries, a little cassis, cinnamon, rose petals, mint and dry herbs are accompanied by undergrowth, black tea and cool stone. All this is subtle and presents itself extremely elegant.

Mouth

This impressive elegance is also found on the palate. Here, too, the cherries provide the opening, exuding a tart juiciness and accompanied by a handful of barberries and pomegranate seeds. But then it gets warmer and chocolatier with a creamy texture, a sweet core as well as a prominent but decidedly fine-grained tannin. The absence of tasting wood completely puts the spotlight on this wine's excellent fruit. Today, it is almost a sacrilege when Syrah and Cabernet appear in Priorat cuvees of the newer type. But Daphne Glorian has not yet been able to decide to remove these vines from the vineyards in favor of the autochthonous grape varieties. When tasting this wine, one can only say fortunately; because the Laurel is blessed with an almost superb balance and finesse, a great length and elegance.
