Nose

2017 La Pierre Noire has a dark, mysterious aura. The nose doesn't reveal too much at first. Wet stones, subtle toasty aromas. Blackberries and morello cherries as well as black cherries. A clue to the origin is provided by the discreet hint of garrigue. From the spice corner, however, white pepper and rosemary are predominant, rounding it out balsamic and ethereal. The cool note lashes out towards pencil. Dark chocolate and a bit of licorice finish it off. A sleeping giant in the nose that will still develop great.

Palate

Tightly woven and concentrated, it enters the stage of taste. Melting tannin combined with a cool minerality at high fruit concentration. A fine extract remains on the teeth and underpins the density of this wine. Despite all the superlatives, this wine remains true to Philippe Gimel's style and terroir. La Pierre Noire still emanates a silky mouthfeel and a dark, cool elegance. Discreet bitter tones are contrasted by a taut acid structure. This vitalizes the wine immensely and gives signals for its high storage potential. Tart chocolate, mint and nuances of liquorice spread across the palate after each sip. The dark fruit, spices and herbs of the nose dance together in a wonderfully synchronized ballet. Each step is attuned to the other and well considered. And so the finale also strides along long and elegantly.
