Wine information

The Ölberg adjoins the Idig directly to the north. The vineyards lie quite high on the edge of the Haard and slope towards the east-southeast. This gives the vines sunshine early in the morning. Especially on hot days, the early shade of the mountains gives the vines a rest. Air currents from the neighbouring Klausental in the Palatinate Forest bring additional cooling at night. The soil of the Königsbacher Ölberg is characterised by Tertiary limestone marl, the so-called terra fusca. In the topsoil, this is mixed with red sandstone rubble. In the 2018 vintage, the Christmann winery re-grafted half of the old vines in this plot to French clones.

Information on the expansion

100 % Handpicked into small cases on 13 September 2019, spontaneous fermentation with 25 % whole clusters, aged in barrique until February 2021, 10 % new wood, bottled in May 2021.

Color

Muted garnet red, violet at the core.

Nose

The 2019 Königsbacher Ölberg Spätburgunder VDP.Erste Lage from Christmann is densely packed on the nose with dark berries, black cherries, plum jam and wood spice, which expresses itself with fine vanilla and noble dark chocolate. Dried herbs, such as thyme and rosemary, complete its beautiful fragrance.

Palate

On the tongue it is demanding, the fresh acidity and the equally youthful tannin point to its youth. A wine with power and expression that looks forward to the carafe and further years of maturation. Great Burgundy with equally great ageing potential - the patient connoisseur will be rewarded with fantastic winemaking.

Decant at this stage if possible and enjoy from large glasses.
