Wine information

The VDP. Erste Lage Ölberg in Königsbach is one of the top vineyards that was already counted among the best in the Kgl. Bodenbewertung (soil evaluation) of 1828, which counted it among the best in the Palatinate. As in the Idig, the soil is characterised by tertiary limestone marl, the so-called terra fusca. In the topsoil, this is mixed with red sandstone rubble, which was washed down from the Haardt Mountains onto the hills of the Mittelhaardt over many thousands of years. The vineyards are situated quite high on the edge of the Haardt at the exit of the Klausental of the Pfälzerwald. This gives the vineyard sunshine early in the morning. In the evening, after hot days, the vines can recover quite early in the shade of the mountains, and there is also a cool air current from the valley at night. All this leads to dense, complex wines with great minerality.

Information on the expansion

As a rule, the early ripening grapes used in the VDP. Estate Wine. The harvest of the Königsbacher Ölberg VDP. Erste Lage is then harvested in a further round, whereby the grapes are harvested under strict selection of only fully ripe, healthy berries at the optimal time. The yields here are usually only 35 hl/ha, so that the grapes achieve an optimal fullness of flavour. The grapes are carefully transported to the press house as whole bunches, destemmed and crushed, and fermented in open vats by regular punching down with the vineyard's own yeasts for about two weeks. Unfined and untreated, the wine matures for a long time on the fine lees in a mixture of new and used barrique barrels.

Color

Muted garnet red, delicate lightening towards the rim.

Nose

What a seducer on the nose - wild raspberry, cassis, cassis leaves, cranberry jam and elderberry jelly. Mediterranean herbal notes of rosemary and thyme, accompanied by floral fragrance of violets and wild roses. Elegant and present, a little cool and aristocratic in appearance.

Palate

The 2018 Königsbacher Ölberg Spätburgunder VDP.Erste Lage from Christmann shows itself with filigree fruit on the tongue, its acidity is delicate and polished, just like its tannin. A truly Burgundy-like Spätburgunder, with minerality and a salty note and moderate alcohol of 12.5 vol%. Very good storage potential and a wine that loves dishes with a Mediterranean influence.
