Nose
The Old Vines Riesling Like all 2020 wines, it initially appears very young and is characterised by a clear yeast note, which will dissipate within months - and this was noticeable in the 2019s. Behind it lies a clear statement about the terroir, the moist slate and a kind of Spätlese that is not ripe and opulent, but rather crisp and juicy. Grapefruits, green and yellow apples, crunchy vineyard peaches and Reineclauden, but above all a lot of moist, broken slate with a hint of ginger.
Palate
On the palate, the wine has the effect of a deeper and somewhat warmer Slate crystalwhich is absolutely fitting, as the Old vines Riesling to the Slate crystal how a dry Spätlese relates to a dry Kabinett. What had been a little out of joint at the Karthäuserhof in the meantime is now firmly back in place. The entire portfolio clearly corresponds to a quality pyramid, and that is where the Old vines Riesling has a lot to offer. With 3.9 grams of residual sugar and a moderate 5.9 grams of acidity, the Spätlese still seems clearly dry, but not as uncompromising as the Slate crystal. Instead, there are more dimensions of mouth-filling, still crisp fruit, herbs and lots of stone. What particularly stands out here is the extremely elegant creaminess, a very light tannin and the wonderful length.
