Tasting note from from 26.01.2022, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Just one year after taking over the family-owned winery "La Soufrandière", the Bret brothers started their second project "Bret Brothers" in 2001. With the aim of being able to offer a wide range of selected terroir wines from southern Burgundy and Beaujolais, they buy in grapes from friendly winegrowers with small microplots and as old vines as possible, who work according to the same strict quality guidelines as the brothers do in their own vineyards. The wines are prepared with the same passion and care as those of "La Soufrandiere" and are matured in their own cellar.

The Julienas was vinified according to the ZEN method. The wines of this line are vinified without the addition of sulphur until bottling, at which point they receive a small dose of SO2, not exceeding 20mg, which again sets them apart from the regular collection of La Soufrandière and the Bret Bros. wines.

The plot "La Bottière" is only 0.5 hectares in size and lies on pure granite soils at 260 metres above sea level. The whole grapes were spontaneously fermented intracellularly and aged for 10 months in used barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered after the addition of only 10mg SO2.

Color

Dark ruby red with black core and violet reflections.

Nose

The 2020 Julienas from the Climat "La Bottière" by the Bret Brothers is a true chameleon. Red-fruity notes of berries and cherries mingle with citrusy aromas of green mandarins as it aerates. Supported by dark spices of black long pepper and allspice, it reminds of graphite, pencil lead and wet stones, whereby the fruit always remains the driving force in this mixture.

Mouth

The Julienas flows over the palate with a silky attack, the fruit firmly woven into the fabric of extract, tannin and ripe acidity. Transparent with an almost dancing lightness, the Bret Bros. focus on finesse rather than maximum concentration in this wine. The fruit sets the pace here as well and receives unconditional support from the tightly woven and fine tannins, which let it glisten almost weightlessly across the palate. Formidable drink.
