Wine description for Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Federspiel trocken 1988 from Nikolaihof

Colour & appearance
Deep old gold with amber-coloured reflections that bear witness to over three decades of ageing. Clear and bright in the glass, with remarkable brilliance for its age.
Nose
A fascinating spectrum of flavours that impressively demonstrates the legendary ageing potential of Grüner Veltliner. Dried camomile, Beeswax and Honeydew melon dominate, accompanied by roasted hazelnuts and a touch of Petrol. Behind this Candied citrus peel, Dried herbs and a mineral trace of damp stone.
Palate
Remarkably vital for a 36-year-old wine. The moderate alcohol concentration of 11% gives it an elegant lightness. Ripe pear, Quince and Apricot merge with a fine, almost salty minerality. The acidity is still present, wonderfully integrated and carries the wine effortlessly. Texture like liquid silk, with a subtle Nuttiness and Honey notes, that never become intrusive.
Departure
Long, complex and impressively persistent. The mineral component returns, accompanied by Dried herbs and a fine Citrus bitterness. A touch of white pepper in the reverberation.
Terroir & origin
From the „Im Weingebirge“ vineyard, a parcel within the „Alte Point“, at an altitude of 206-225 metres. The Paragneiss subsoil with Loess and clay on the surface gives this wine its characteristic minerality and ageing potential. The northern exposure of the six-hectare site above Mautern ensures cool conditions.
Food pairing suggestions
Braised sweetbreads, Turbot with saffron sauce, ripe Comté or Gruyère, fried chanterelles with parsley, Boiled beef with apple horseradish.
Special features
Archive Release 2024 - a rare insight into the ageing potential of biodynamically produced Wachau wines. Nikolaihof, Austria's oldest winery, has been farming according to Demeter guidelines since 1971. This Federspiel impressively demonstrates that great Grüner Veltliners can last for decades.
