Wine information

The VDP. Grosse Lage Idig is one of the most excellent vineyards in the Palatinate and, due to our monopoly-like ownership, it also represents the core of our estate. The wines produced here are among the style-defining wines in the Großes Gewächs category. Year after year, they are celebrated almost worldwide and counted among the best wines in their category. In both the Gault Millau Wine Guide and the Eichelmann Wine Guide, they are counted among the small exclusive selection of the most important German Grand Crus.

As a court chamber estate of the Palatine electors, this stately vineyard was first mentioned in documents as early as the 14th century. The monopoly-like size of 4 hectares in a prime location, which is an absolute rarity in the Palatinate, can be traced back to this possession of the Palatine counts. The vineyard slopes steeply to the south-southeast by Palatinate standards. However, a gentle wind constantly flows down through the Klausental from the Stabenberg, which always keeps the vineyard healthy for a long time with its drying effect.

The Idig rests on a mighty limestone rock massif that formed from limestone deposits after the Upper Rhine Graben collapsed in the Tertiary period. The topsoil consists of terra fusca, which was formed from limestone and clay in combination with the red sandstone debris that was washed down from the Haardt Mountains onto the hills of the Mittelhaardt over many thousands of years. The topsoil contains countless limestones but also a considerable amount of basalt, which was brought here from the Pechsteinkopf in Forst about 150 years ago.

Information on the expansion

As a rule, the early ripening grapes used in the VDP. Estate Wine. The harvest of the Idig VDP. Großes Gewächs then takes place in a further round, whereby the grapes are harvested at the optimal time under strict selection of only fully ripe, healthy berries. The yields here are usually only 35 hl/ha, so that the grapes achieve an optimal fullness of flavour. The grapes are carefully transported to the press house as whole bunches, destemmed and crushed, and fermented in open vats by regular punching down with the vineyard's own yeasts for about two weeks. Unfined and untreated, the wine matures for a long time on the fine lees in a mixture of new and used barrique barrels.

Color

Muted garnet red, violet at the core.

Nose

The 2018 Spätburgunder Königsbacher Idig Großes Gewächs beguiles on the nose with sweet sour cherries, blackberries, pickled plums, dried figs, wild raspberries, raspberry jam, roses and violet notes. After a longer opening, aromas of black olives, rosemary and sage join in. The Idig's memorable and cool minerality gives it depth and complexity and endows it with Burgundian finesse.

Palate

On the palate, one notices that it is just at the beginning of its drinking maturity. The intense and invigorating minerality is clearly recognisable, which combines with a finely structured acidity and an equally fine-grained tannin structure. Elegant and fine fruity notes of wild raspberry and cherry tickle the palate and already invite to combine it with a finesse-rich cuisine after a longer opening. Moreover, it still has some years of storage potential and will intensify its finesse and complexity with some cellar ageing.
