The steep, south-sloping Idig, whose name comes from the inscription on a field cross, is made up of terra fusca and red sandstone scree, plus limestone and basalt. The elegant red berry fruit has come to the fore, the extraction is finer and the tannins appear highly filigree.

The 4-hectare Idig in the municipality of Königsbach is one of the great vineyards of the Palatinate. The steep, south-facing Idig, whose name goes back to the inscription on a field cross, consists of terra fusca and red sandstone rubble, plus limestone and basalt. In combination with the subsoil and its excellent water storage properties, this unique terroir is created. Not only the Rieslings have established the reputation of the Idig as a top terroir, but also the Pinot Noirs have always been among the best red wines of the Palatinate. The 2017 vintage is the first that Sophie Christmann has vinified. The grapes were carefully selected and then fermented with the vineyard's own yeasts in open vats for about two weeks. The wine is then matured on the fine lees in barrique barrels. The elegant red berry fruit has come to the fore, the extraction is finer and the tannins appear highly filigree. A change of style that makes one curious about the coming vintages.

Color

Transparent ruby red, bright and clear.

Nose

The 2017 Idig Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs from Weingut Christmann appears on the nose as a complex conglomerate in constant flux. When the initial smoky veil is lifted, mild spices such as black pepper, allspice and laurel are revealed, all taped together with brown leucoplast, which seems to be inherent to the Idig as implemented aromatics. Over that, like Banksy's red heart, floats lush cherries, plums and sloes over dark forest floor of smoked bacon.

Mouth

The fruit is the undisputed leitmotif of this idig. Framed by subtle tannin and filigree use of wood, the slightly smoky note is spicily complemented and aromatically framed by noble tannin. Fine-grained and polished, it shapes the structure of the new style, the clearly reduced wood acts in the background like a canvas for this aromatically profound, fruity joyful still life.
