Gradually, however, the other voices set in slightly exotic fruit notes, the Virginia tobacco again, even more nuts than could be guessed on the nose, pepper, mustard flour, turmeric, some candied ginger and lots and lots of lime. And so also, to anticipate, quite especially here with the 2016 Königsbacher Idig.

Wine information

The Idig is the core of the winery. First mentioned in the 14th century, it remains an undivided, four-hectare monopollage to this day. The slope drops steeply to the south-southeast and is characterized by a massive limestone subsoil and a terra fusca limestone scree layer with red sandstone scree and basalt. The Idig can certainly be counted among the few Grand Cru sites that Germany has to offer. The Riesling was harvested in November completely free of botrytis. It was left on the mash for up to six hours, spontaneously fermented and, like all Christmann wines, fermented down to 2 grams of residual sugar and aged in large double barrels.

Nose

Opening an idig is always something special. And so also, to anticipate, especially here at the 2016 Königsbacher Idig. The Große Gewächs opens relatively quickly with a yellow and spicy attack. Ripe stone fruit meets a handful of curry leaves, light tobacco, pepper and a little caraway. In the background, you pick up stony, nutty and slightly yeasty notes. The more air the wine draws, the deeper and darker it becomes in its aromatics.

Mouth

On the palate, this journey into the possible depth and complexity of German Riesling continues, of course, even if the juicy yet cool stone fruit and citrus aromas play first fiddle. Gradually, however, the other voices set in slightly exotic fruit notes, the Virginia tobacco again, even more nuts than were apparent on the nose, pepper, mustard flour, turmeric, some candied ginger and lots and lots of lime. As time goes on, the wine gets more and more exciting and builds up more and more pressure. It's enough to give you goosebumps and make you rub your eyes in wonder that this big orchestra is already playing, a few months after bottling. This is extraordinary and makes the wine stand out even more in its position as a wine of the future. primus inter pares. 2016 is generally, but with the Idig especially, a very big throw in the house of Christmann.
