Nose
2020 Leithaberg DAC Chardonnay by Heike and Gernot Heinrich is discreetly characterised by a fine reduction. At the beginning, it oscillates between gunpowder, flint and salted almonds. With a little movement in the glass as well as patience - caraffing without caution would also help - it then opens up a broader spectrum of aromas. Popcorn and buttered toast and a little salted caramel come first. Dark, wet stones provide depth and elegance. Lemon zest, grated lime and bergamot as well as grapefruit bring energy and freshness. Grilled pineapple and mirabelle plum provide a delicate, soft yellow fruitiness. In the background, lemon balm, parsley, fennel pollen, coriander seeds and aniseed can be detected.
Palate
On the palate, this Burgenland wine is pithy and taut. The acid structure leaves its mark on this slender Chardonnay. It makes its way with pressure. It leaves room for minerality and finesse. Pleasant bitter notes give it varied elements and points of contrast along the way. It lives immensely from energy, freshness and esprit. But it is the immense saltiness that is its elementary link. Above all, the aromas of herbs and citrus fruits from the nose shape the taste picture in the aftertaste. The saltiness is still enormously present in the finish and continues to shape sensory thoughts for a long time.
