The grapes for this Pinot Noir do not come from the Kamptal, but from Gumpoldskirchen, Lower Austria in the Thermenregion. Colloquially, the area is also called Südbahn, because it borders directly on Vienna to the south. Not only in terms of landscape, but also in terms of soils, the region is somewhat reminiscent of Burgundy - the calcareous soils of the Thermenregion are particularly suitable for the cultivation of Burgundy varieties.
The grapes for the Gumpoldskirchen Pinot Noir were selectively harvested by hand at the beginning of September. Fermentation with our own yeasts took place spontaneously, 20% of the grapes were fermented as whole clusters for better tannin yield in oak fermentation racks. After alcoholic fermentation, the wines were on full lees in 300 litre barrels for 12 months and then on fine lees in used large barrels for six months. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Color
Dark ruby red.
Nose
The 2018 Pinot Noir Gumpoldskirchen by Fred Loimer has a broad spectrum of aromas, smelling of a full basket of fully ripe heart cherries and thus reminiscent of a painting by old Belgian masters. A bowl of dried fruit such as plums and apples to the right and a mortar to the left contribute the mild spicy notes of allspice, black pepper and a little cardamom reminiscent of gingerbread. In the overtone area, floral notes and some blood orange zest show up.
Mouth
Despite its expansive aroma, it is refreshing and clear on the palate with transparent fruit and silky tannin. Everything fits the elegant structure of the wine without an ounce of fat on the hip. The cool cherry is accelerated by the seamlessly integrated acidity and firm phenolic, which gives it additional pace. Fine spice and pleasant length with a tart finish.
