Color
The wine shows itself in a rich golden yellow clear and shiny in the glass.
Nose
With the scent of its first nose in the unswirled glass, this tension-laden Wachauer seems to almost completely dispense with fruit. Leisurely aromas of fresh, chopped leaves, damp rolling tobacco and pickled green pepper rise. This wine needs time and should ideally be caraffed well in advance of drinking. After some time, notes of fully ripe green fruit such as gooseberry, nahi pear and star fruit but also watermelon reveal themselves. All these are supported by white smoke.
Habemus Vießlinger Stern.
Palate
On the palate, as on the nose, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner from Martin Muthenthaler's Vießlinger Stern vineyard shines with its, almost modest, meticulousness. Its power is not edged with thick contours, but lies, quite the opposite, with the immense delicacy of its pen stroke. Yellow-fleshed fruit meets herbal spice at eye level with delicate, stimulating bitterness, an energizing acidity and a cold-smoky, stony finish; as if two flintstones, striking against each other, were spraying sparkles.
