Wine information
The Spitzer Graben site is one of the most extreme in the Wachau. The base alone is around 100 metres higher than most other sites, and the slope is steeply uphill, dry stone wall after dry stone wall. Untypically, the climate is hardly influenced by the Danube, and so even in summer it gets cool in the afternoon. The primary rock soils are poor and partly without any humus. The Grüner Veltliner is fermented spontaneously and matured in large 850-litre wooden barrels.
Color
Slightly cloudy yellow with clear green reflections.
Nose
The 2020 Grüner Veltliner Spitzer Graben reveals itself with dried raspberry, baked apple, kumquat and rosehip. Notes of liquorice, walnut and aniseed are also present. With a little aeration, nettle and chicory show up as well as smoky hints.
Palate
On the palate, it attacks with wonderful freshness, which is due to its acidity and minerality. Its invigorating peppery spiciness, its malty notes, its yeasty density and its melting can also be seen. A wine that loves earthy, spicy and original cuisine - and it loves it.
