Wine information

The cuvée Grey Freedom is composed of 50 % Pinot Blanc, 20 % Pinot Gris and 15 % Chardonnay and Neuburger each from the crystalline slate and quartzite soils on the Joiser Hackelsberg and the chalky and slatey eastern slopes of the Leithagebirge from the top sites Breitenbrunner Edelgraben and Windener Alter Berg. The grapes were harvested from mid-August to mid-September, the must was fermented spontaneously and left on the skins for about two weeks, after which it was slowly pressed with a basket press. This was followed by 17 months of ageing in 600-litre cellar amphorae and in large used wood. The wine was bottled unfiltered and without the addition of sulphur. Please turn the bottle beforehand to integrate the sediment into the wine. Ideally, the wine should be caraffed.

Color

slightly cloudy orange-red with copper reflections

Nose

The mash fermented Grey Freedom is a chameleon whose character changes from moment to moment. The cuvée smells of flower and herb meadows, porse and hay, of a melange of ripe but slightly sour berry fruits such as currants, many fresh citrus fruits including zests and red apple. All this is complemented by notes of hops, Earl Grey and herbs, some liquorice and Campari.

Palate

On the palate, the wine seems as supple as it is lively and offers a wonderfully compact, grippy, but not too demanding tannic structure. It rubs very finely across the palate, combining there with a yeasty silky texture as well as with the aforementioned combination of fruit, hops, tea and herbs. The acidity is brilliant, which rarely appears really powerful and massive in an orange wine. That is also the case here. The acidity is present, but silky, very lively and clear. The way the wine is matured gives it a slight extract and yeast sweetness. The tart notes and the fine spiciness have a precise effect, the wine is overall extremely lively, mineral and ethereal despite its earthiness, which is also expressed in the choice of bottle. It is an excellent food companion, but also a meditation wine that can be rediscovered again and again over hours or even days.
