Wine information

The cuvée Grey Freedom is composed of 50 % Pinot Blanc, 30 % Pinot Gris and 20 % Chardonnay from the crystalline slate and quartzite soils on the Joiser Hackelsberg (Pinot Gris) and the chalky and slatey eastern slopes of the Leithagebirge from the top sites Breitenbrunner Edelgraben and Windener Alter Berg (Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay). The grapes were harvested in mid-August to mid-September, fermented spontaneously and left on the skins for about two weeks, then pressed slowly with a basket press. This was followed by 17 months of ageing in 600-litre cellar amphorae and in large, used wood. The wine was bottled unfiltered and without the addition of sulphur. Please rotate the bottle beforehand to integrate the sediment into the wine. Ideally, the wine should be caraffed.

slightly cloudy orange-red with copper reflections

This wine belongs to that category that changes from moment to moment, so a tasting note can only ever be a snapshot. The cuvée Grey Freedom impresses with a melange of ripe, but slightly tart berry fruits such as white and red currants, many fresh citrus fruits such as blood oranges, grapefruits and pomelos including zests, red apple and a nuance of tropical fruit. Essential here are also aromas of hops, black tea and herbs.

On the palate, the wine shows a wonderfully compact, grippy, but not too pronounced tannin structure. It rubs very finely over the palate, combines there with a yeasty silky texture as well as with the mentioned combination of fruit, hops, tea and herbs. Brilliant is the acidity, which after all rarely seems really punchy and massive in an orange wine. That's the case here as well. The acidity is present but silky, very lively and clear for it. The wine is an excellent food companion, but also a meditation wine that you can discover over hours or even over days again and again.
