The Christmann winery is now in its eighth generation. In 2017, Sophie Christmann returned to the winery and initially began to focus on Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Biodynamic cultivation is the basis for producing authentic wines that are characterised by their origin and for preserving the vineyards of the estate in the best possible condition for future generations. This philosophy is also continued in the cellar. Spontaneous fermentation, renunciation of any fining, use of gravity instead of pumps are the premises of the gentle vinification in order to translate the characteristics of the terroir as carefully as possible to the bottle. The grapes for the Grauburgunder Gutswein come from the best Gimmeldingen vineyards and are hand-picked relatively early to avoid over-ripening. After two to three hours of maceration, the grapes are pressed and fermented in steel and in large, classic wooden barrels.
Color
Bright straw yellow, bright and clear.
Nose
A picture book Pinot Gris nose with still life of fruit on tables. A bowl of red-cheeked apples also contains a few grapes and freshly cracked hazelnuts and walnuts. None of this is in morbid sepia, but perfectly lit in a modern studio with sweeping views over the Palatinate.
Mouth
On the nose, the 2019 Pinot Gris from Christmann is straightforward and taut with refreshing acidity and distinctive fruit. With its juicy, saucy fruit, it fulfils all the expectations one might have of it with flying colours. Joyful with fast drinking, jovial character and screw cap.
