Wine Description for Celler Batlle Brut 2014 by Gramona

Character
The Celler Batlle Brut 2014 is one of the flagship wines of the Gramona house – a Cava crafted with patience and conviction, in an age when patience has become rare. With an extended time on the lees that far exceeds the legal minimum requirements, this sparkling wine develops a depth and complexity that clearly sets it apart from mass-produced Cavas. Dry and precise, with a lively, delicate mousse, it embodies the finest that Catalonia’s Penedès has to offer in sparkling wine culture.
Terroir & Origin
Gramona has been rooted for generations in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia in the heart of the Penedès – that cool, rolling hillside region shaped by sea breezes and Mediterranean light, south-west of Barcelona. The terroir produces wines with natural acidity and mineral tension, qualities that are essential for fine sparkling wines. The vintage 2014 was considered cool and long-lasting in the region, with excellent conditions for freshness and structure – ideal for a wine designed for years of maturation on the lees.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The blend of the autochthonous varieties Xarello and Macabeu is a commitment to Catalan identity. Whilst Macabeu contributes elegance and floral delicacy, Xarello – the true soul of Penedès – brings body, structure and that characteristic herbal spice which gives this Cava its distinctive character. Gramona pursues artisanal vinification following the traditional méthode champenoise, with particular attention to organic viticulture and minimal intervention in the cellar.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A Cava of this calibre demands food worthy of its complexity. Grilled seafood, scallops with saffron sauce or Jamón Ibérico are classic companions. It also pairs beautifully with Paella de Mariscos, aged Manchego or simply with a selection of Catalan tapas. Those enjoying it as an aperitif should let it breathe in a good crystal glass – it deserves attention.
