Wine information

The Gimmeldingen bee garden stretches over steep terraces and beautiful slopes of the Haardt Mountains between Gimmeldingen and Königsbach along the edge of the forest. It is well protected from cold winds by a slight hollow and is thus also used by beekeepers to this day. The soil of the Biengarten is characterised by tertiary limestone marl, terra fusca, and lies on the same limestone reef as the Königsbach vineyards Idig and Ölberg in the northern neighbourhood. The old vines bear only a few, loose grapes.

Information on the expansion

Harvested 17 September 2019, selective hand harvest into small boxes, spontaneous fermentation with 25 % whole clusters, ageing in barrique, until February 2021, 10 % new wood, bottling in May 2021.

Color

Muted garnet red with lightening towards the rim.

Nose

Wow, what a seducer - beguiling notes of sweet cherries, wild raspberries, lots of floral splendour reminiscent of wild roses and violets, all set in the aristocratic chalky imprint of the Biengarten.

Palate

You want to sink into the 2019 Gimmeldinger Biengarten Spätburgunder VDP.Erste Lage and never emerge again. The sweet berry fruit mixes with cool notes, invigorating acidity and a salty trace. A powerful, precise wine, a Pinot full of expression and elegance, with great drinking flow. Not only a beautiful wine, but also a formidable food companion!

Food recommendations by Christina Hilker

  • Fregola Sarda with tomatoes, nettle and morels
  • Duck ragout with orange juice, glazed carrots and snow peas
