Info about the wine

In the Grand Cru Rangen site, growing the Gewürztraminer grape is not a matter of course! The influence of the altitude and the cold valley in late winter/early spring can delay bud break and flowering can be problematic. For this reason, the two small Gewürztraminer vineyards are located just above the Thur River below Clos-Saint-Urbain. The volcanic sedimentary soils of this vineyard are capable of catapulting this aromatic grape to both the nose and palate.

Info about the expansion

Gewürztraminer is traditionally harvested late, with a lot of noble rot. But that was not the case in 2016. The fermentation was very slow and the yeasts managed to produce it bone dry.

Color

Brilliant, radiant golden yellow with fine green reflexes.

Nose

The 2016 Gewurztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann does not beguile by power, but by its exuberant delicacy and its floating fragrance, reminiscent of dried rose petals, fresh ginger, pear, white peach and blossom honey.

Palate

According to Olivier, this 2016 Gewurztraminer from Rangen is like a UFO on the planet of Gewurztraminers. Absolutely right, it lacks everything we think of when we think of a classic Gewurztraminer from Alsace. It is neither sweet nor aromatic, even turgid, but it shines with a sharp and extremely firm structure. Dry, salty and endlessly long, it reveals itself to us as a true marvel of a wine. This deeply touching masterpiece still has decades ahead of it!

Recommendation

The impatient are advised to decant it one or two days before and to enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses.
