The Fürstentum vineyard extends over the two villages of Kientzheim and Sigolsheim and is located at 300-400 meters above sea level. Fürstentum is one of the quintessential sites for Alsatian Gewürztraminer and was first mentioned in a document in 1330. It benefits from the predominantly southern exposure, the soils are a conglomerate of marl, limestone and sandstone, whereby the marl is commonly attributed strength and structure, the limestone freshness and drinking draught, and the sandstone elegance and complexity.

The Gewürztraminer Grand Cru Furstentum stand on a steep part of the slope with south-eastern exposure on an island with calcareous soil and Mediterranean vegetation. The soil produces opulent Gewürztraminers with great aromatic complexity, elegant structure and good ageing potential. The grapes from the best plots of the Grand Cru site are harvested by hand and fermented in large old wooden barrels with their own yeasts. The long ageing on the lees gives the wines substance and their special longevity.

Nose

The 2019 Fürstenberg Gewürztraminer from Domaine Weinbach is one of the global icons of this grape variety. In terms of complexity and longevity, it is unparalleled, and so it needs the appropriate time to open up in its youthful stage. The carafe is therefore mandatory, but the glass should not be too wide. Then, with increasing aeration, notes of mango, orange blossom and wild fennel appear. Bitter nuances, kumquat or pink grapefruit as well as citron follow. An ethereal floral note hovers over everything, the rose part of the whole but by no means a leitmotif. Orange blossoms, pickled ginger and wet stones complete the picture.

Mouth

On the palate it is dense, viscous and of such immense inner tension that one thinks it would burst in the mouth. Aromatically the flavours of the nose are reflected, appear at present, however, still quite closed - as it is appropriate for a Grand Cru. However, its assets are imposing. It pulsates powerfully on the palate and tells of a long life, the acidity is relatively high and carries the residual sweetness as if on clouds. This Gewürztraminer has a bass that you can still feel two street corners away. Above it, a melody as light as a spring breeze blowing through a freshly cleaned window beckons.
