Wine description for the Oberbergener Pulverbuck Weisburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2022 from Franz Keller

With this Pinot Blanc from the first vineyard Pulverbuck, Franz Keller provides remarkable proof that Pinot Blanc in Baden can mature into one of the most fascinating white wines in Germany. The 2022 vintage is a classic representative of this traditional vineyard, which has been a flagship of the winery for over four decades.

Colour & appearance

In the glass, the wine presents itself in a radiant golden yellow with brilliant clarity - a visual harbinger of the intensity that is to follow.

Nose

After vigorous decanting, a beguiling spectrum of flavours unfolds. Yellow stone fruit - Apricot, Kumquat and Quince - dominate the first impression. This is followed by floral notes, a hint of honey and the subtle spiciness of the large wooden cask, which is reminiscent of Cedar wood and freshly toasted baguette with salted butter. A smoky, mineral component hovers over everything, impressively reflecting the 400 metre high limestone soil of the site.

Palate

On the palate, the wine shows its Burgundian side: salty minerality meets fine phenolic structure and an elegant, invigorating acidity. The 18-month maturation - twelve months in traditional oak barrels and a further six on the lees in stainless steel - gives the wine remarkable texture and depth. At a moderate 12.5% alcohol, it always remains precise and easy to drink. This is not a loud wine, but a fine, classic Pinot Blanc with considerable ageing potential.

General information

The special orientation of the site on the edge of the forest, combined with the high proportion of active lime in the soil, creates ideal conditions for Pinot Blanc with a mineral character and lively freshness.

Food pairing suggestions

An ideal accompaniment to classic cuisine: Sweetbreads, Turbot or Poularde in cream sauces, Asparagus with hollandaise sauce, Morels, more mature Comté or Mountain cheese.

Special features

This wine clearly benefits from aeration and will gain even more complexity as it matures in the bottle. An authentic terroir Pinot Blanc that shows what the Baden region is capable of achieving at the highest level.
