Tasting note from dated 20.10.2020, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

At the age of 16, Félix Callejo had to take over the winery after the sudden death of his father. Together with his wife Pilar, he raised the wines of the Ribera del Duero to a new level, which condensed in 1989 in the foundation of the current estate. Today, the winery in the province of Burgos is run by their four children. The wines thrive at altitudes between 830-950 metres above sea level, which, combined with the resulting temperature amplitudes and lean sandy and limestone soils, gives the region the best conditions for elegant and fine Ribera wines. The Finca Valedelroble comes from a single parcel of the finca of the same name at 930 metres altitude. The cuvée of 75% Tinto Fino and 25% Merlot was fermented in concrete and then matured in French oak.

Color

Ruby garnet with violet reflections.

Nose

The wines of Bodegas Félix Callejo always manage to keep the balance between full ripeness and maximum fruit without ever slipping into overripe or cooked. Plums, black cherries, blackberries and blueberries draw out the dark fruit enveloped in delicate headiness. Floral top notes garnish the fruit with hibiscus and hollyhock, a solid bass dark chocolate booms in the basement, leather, spice and black olives offer spicy opposition. The use of wood has slimmed down noticeably in recent years.

Mouth

On the palate, the 2016 Finca Valedelroble from Félix Callejo is like a picture-book red wine from the Ribera del Duero. Powerful, almost impenetrable fruit on the palate, gripping tannins and skilful use of wood. The whole shows complex and cool thanks to present minerality and agile acidity, which brings decent traction into the matter. The high-pile tannins make it almost chewy and add a noble sweetness to the extract-sweet fruit of this cracking dry wine that makes the glass refill quickly.
