Info:

Calafata is not just a winery. In terms of wine, it should rather be called a cooperative. It is a social project and a catch basin for the socially disadvantaged or marginalized. Thus, one can also expect political statements here. On the back label as well as on the cork you can find "make wine not war" and "in ground we trust". Clear statements. Besides wine, they are also dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables and olives.
The Figlioduncane is a strictly limited Cabernet Sauvignon, which is only produced in the best vintages and exclusively filled in magnum bottles. In 2017, this was only 120 bottles. It comes from a few rows of Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the higher elevations of Maolina. The berries are pressed with the feet and later fermented on the mash in a large fermentation vat. The maturation takes place for two years in used barrique barrels.

Color:

Dense cherry red, violet reflections

Nose:

For a Cabernet, a dark, intense nose. The dark fruits like blackberries, plums, elderberries and cassis also experience an ethereal counterpart. Thus, mint and eucalyptus contribute freshness in small doses. Especially cassis and elderberry are lifted sensory. A nuance of graphite gives the wine something cool and elegant, while cracked pepper adds a little spice.

Palate:

On the palate, it reflects exactly this. A prime example of a Cabernet Sauvignon that, for all its power, always comes through with freshness and a cool mouthfeel. The dark berries are clearly dominant. But the ethereal component as well as the silky cool mouthfeel round this out brilliantly. The tannin is well integrated, present but not dominant. A timeless wine that shines with elegance.
