Rias Baixas

Information about the wine

2014 is the first vintage of this wine made from the rare Espadeiro grape variety, indigenous to the Rias Baixas. There are just 352 bottles of this wine. The name Espadeiro is a bit confusing. Actually, Espadeiro is a grape variety originating from the Vinho Verde region at the Minho. In Setúbal, Portugal, it is also called Espadeiro. Trincadeira called. Although the Minho borders the Spanish Rias Baixas, the Spanish Espadeiro is a variant of the southwestern French variety Camarou Noir. There, it is only found in old Jurançon vineyards. In the Rias Baixas, there are still about 130 hectares. The vine used to be cultivated on trees, then in pergola training, and this is how it is grown at Attis, where the Espadeiro is found on granite soils with sandy-loamy topsoil. After complete destemming and gentle vertical pressing, the wine is fermented spontaneously, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging for twelve months in used 500-liter French oak barrels.

Nose

This Espadeiro from an ancient vineyard is a feast for the senses. It starts with clear violet notes, a little lily and the intense ripe fruit of dark and tart red berries. Finally, there are notes of pepper and licorice, and one doesn't really know where to classify this wine. It is like an unusual, somewhat out of the ordinary story.

Mouth

What makes this wine so special is the impressive balance it strikes between its rural, down-to-earth character and a fine elegance. The wine has freshness, has traction, also shows the acidic and yet also ripe fruit on the palate. The proximity to the sea gives it coolness and iodine notes, the warmth of the area a ripe juiciness. The wine is both complex and dense, yet playfully light and punchy. It closes with a fine spiciness in which the peppery notes come to the fore again.
