Tasting note from from 29.09.2022, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Konstantin Weiser and his partner Alexandra Künstler have been making steep-slope wines since 2005. It all began with a small plot in the Ellergrub, which they initially developed with Daniel Vollenweider until the current winery was found in 2008. The pure Riesling winery initially produced exclusively residually sweet wines. Today, the 4.2 hectares of production are divided into dry and residually sweet, with most of the wines being vinified semi-dry and coming exclusively from the Ellergub. The concise phenolic is a guiding theme of Weiser-Künstler's wines, which are always contoured by noble bitters in addition to their concise acidity. A trip to the Ellergrub immediately explains why the once famous site was classified as Grand Cru - and at the same time why many winemakers throw in the towel and sites fall into oblivion.

The 100-year-old single-vineyard vines are struggling more and more for water towards the summit. The Middle Moselle is warmer than the Saar, and the Ellergrub is one of the steepest vineyards. The grapes on the Moselle side always have a different ripeness than those on the back. During the harvest, there are always two presses for the different qualities. This is a difficult-to-calculate additional effort to the time- and cost-intensive cultivation, which is rewarded with modest yields of only 15 hectolitres/ha on average.

To save the old cultural landscape and the steep slopes, Weiser artists are members of the Klitzekleiner Ring. You could call it preservation by drinking. A good and important mission.

Color

Light yellow with green reflexes and silver tapered rim.

Nose

On the nose, the 2021 Enkirchener Ellergrub is initially reserved. Then it tells in a soft voice of citrus, mesocarp of the white of lemon, orange blossom and green mandarin. Subtle vegetal notes of lemon balm and verbena make the wheel go round and sketch him as a clear child of his origins.

Mouth

On the palate, it is so crystalline and clear that you simply seem to hear your synapses clinking. Straightforward, puristic and has a blade like a laser sword with the same hum and buzz as in the Star Wars epic. Fresh and citrusy, yet full of juice and power, it performs structurally polished on the palate, full of tension and lightning fast. At a rapid pace, it flows straight and agilely towards its destiny, again and again and again. With 7.5% and a pulsating retronasal finish, it offers the most unrepentant pleasure one may indulge in from the age of 16. For life!
