Info about the wine

Olivier Humbrecht

Clos Windsbuhl has an incredible history dating back to the 14th century, when it was owned by the Habsburgs of Austria. Alsace was part of the Holy Roman Empire until 1648. From the beginning, it was considered a special place, not only for the quality of the wines and their uniqueness, but also for the beauty of the nature surrounding the vineyard and the strong energy of the "hill where the wind plays". The higher altitude, the proximity of the forest and the thin rocky limestone soil are probably the main factors that explain why Windsbuhl produces wines with such elegance and noble character.

Info about the expansion

The vineyard showed superbly in 2019, the grapes were perfectly ripe, but more importantly, they had a balance that allowed the indigenous yeasts to produce an intense, dry wine. It was aged on the coarse lees for 18 months before being bottled without any manipulation.

Color

Intense golden yellow.

Nose

The nose of the 2019 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl demands the carafe, because only with the necessary oxygen contact does this monument of limestone begin to reveal itself. Little fruit, but initially notes of almonds, light nuts, wine yeast, delicate smoky hints and light tobacco emerge from the glass. After a longer opening, pomelo, pink grapefruit and small red apples. Density, depth and exuberant minerality are the attributes that characterise this spectacular wine, which already promises great things on the nose.

Palate

Striking, very dry and incredibly precise with demanding spiciness and crystalline saltiness, it hits the tongue and immediately gets the saliva flowing. In its youthful stage, the fruit is reminiscent of citrus and apple peel. We should first forget this Burgundy-like drop in the cellar for a few years, it will thank us with a true explosion of complexity. Long, never-ending reverberation - a great drop!

The impatient who would like to open it at this moment are advised to decant it at least one day before and not to enjoy it too cold from big Burgundy glasses.
