About the wine
The picturesque Clos Windsbuhl climbs up against the borders of a forest and welcomes the slowly ripening weather that nourishes its vines. The limestone deposits from the secondary period provide a special substrate for viticulture. Especially in 2015, when this vineyard was harvested four weeks after the generally established harvest date in Turckheim.
Development process
The soil composition, rich in magnesium, shapes the character of the wine by giving the structure a certain graininess and producing a higher acidity. The latter can occasionally cause the fermentation process to end earlier.
Optics
A dense, slightly cloudy golden yellow gives the Riesling Clos Windsbuhl an appealing appearance in the glass.
Scent
It requires a decanter effort to encounter the rich bouquet of this limestone monument. The first impression is low in fruitiness, but highlights notes of almonds, light nuts, wine yeast, gentle smoke and light tobacco. After a while, the nuances of pomelo, pink grapefruit and small red apples join in. The intense minerality, density and depth are the main players in this spectacular wine.
Taste
As soon as it hits the tongue, it insists on its presence - striking, extremely dry and incredibly precise with its outstanding spiciness and crystalline saltiness. It challenges the palate with bright notes of nuts, spices and yeast. The subtle fruit notes are reminiscent of citrus and apple skin, making it seem almost Burgundian. It would be advisable to let this special drop mature in the cellar for a few years to reveal its full splendour.
Food recommendations
A risotto with fresh white truffles would be the perfect complement to this wine. Turbot wrapped in fennel and served with a Riesling shallot sauce and caviar would also be an ideal choice. Finally, young pheasant on savoy cabbage, flavoured with smoked bacon and a Riesling sauce would be an excellent dish to accompany this amazing wine. Alternatively, a bowl of Coquilles Saint-Jacques or a veal chop with creamy mushroom sauce could also go well with the noble complexity of this wine.
