Wine information

Vintage

The 2017 vintage will go down in the history of this wine estate. For Olivier Humbrecht, it is one of the three best vintages since the foundation of the wine estate in 1959. However, this time frost and hail limited the yield to less than 20 hl/ha on average. After an early budbreak, two cold spells with sub-zero temperatures on April 21 and 22 exposed even those areas that were more sheltered to frost. An unusually freezing easterly wind froze vines in vineyards like the Herrenweg de Turckheim, which never froze to death in the 60 years Olivier's father has been involved. A hailstorm in the Brand vineyard fortunately remained without major consequences. Midsummer was hot, August milder, and the harvest started on August 29 with Pinot Gris Roche Roulée, followed by terroirs like Rotenberg, Heimbourg, Goldert ... A little rain on September 2 accelerated the ripening. The Rieslings were harvested from 11 September and the harvest finished with Rangen, Hengst and Clos Jebsal on 26 September. Only in Clos Jebsal were there minor signs of botrytis.

Vineyard

The Clos Häuserer is located in a small basin at the foot of the Grand Cru Stallion, whose geological data it shares. The marl and limestone soil is deep here, the Oligocene source rock is at a depth of more than one meter. This Clos is characterised by a very hot climate in summer, as it is sheltered from the winds, whereas in winter it is colder than in the neighbouring Grand Cru. As cold air does not circulate sufficiently, this parcel is usually the most affected during frost. However, this was not the case in 2017. Due to the very late pruning in this plot, and especially the failure to tie before the danger of frost had passed, a large proportion of the buds were not close to the ground, and this small circumstance may have been enough to at least partially avoid frost in them. The young vines at ground level froze, but the buds a metre or more above the ground were spared.

Fermentation

Perfectly small and healthy grapes produced a wine that fermented slowly, but sufficiently so that it could be used as a dry can be called. The wine has 7.8 g/l residual sugar with 4.5 g acidity and 3.05 pH. The yield was just 38 hl/ha due to the frost.

Nose

The scent that wafts over the 2017 Riesling Clos Häuserer de Wintzenheim is classic for the terroir. The limestone-influenced wine smells smoky, stony and mineral with a little citrusy notes of grapefruit, hops and a slightly sweet yeast, wax and honey note - almost as if it hadn't seen any sulphur and had a share of Chenin-blanc. But that's not the case; because Zind-Humbrecht always uses moderate sulfur. Ultimately, the impression remains that this is a punchy and powerful wine.

Mouth

This impression is confirmed directly on the palate. Also here pressure is formed. The power is currently still wrapped in a silk cloth - perceptible, but hidden. This leads to the fact that the Riesling shows itself quite relaxed and initially scores with a range of fresh fruit. Grapefruits can be found here as well, as well as limes - thus, quite typical aromas for this terroir. All this is presented by the Riesling Clos Häuserer markedly clear and precise. This transparency and precision particularly highlights the vintage and is fascinating. Thus, the impression remains that this is a bright, concentrated and at the same time smoky mineral, lively and exciting Riesling, which has a great length and an aging potential of certainly 15 or more years.
