The Grand Cru Goldert in the Gueberschwihr district is probably the Grand Cru with the highest percentage of Muscat grapes, especially of the "small-berry" variety called Muscat d'Alsace. The gentle, east-facing slopes of Goldert lie on a rich and deep marl limestone, where it ripens relatively late and is able to retain the acidity and aromatic potential of this grape variety even in warm weather. Muscat can sometimes be extraverted and true to the variety. This is due to incomplete physiological ripeness, which promotes a common varietal expression. To achieve great terroir expression in such grapes, you need a vineyard capable of slowing ripening but also overriding varietal characteristics. Something the Goldert can do brilliantly.
Color
Sparkling golden yellow.
Nose
The 2019 Muscat Goldert shows itself with fragrant aromatics and brilliant freshness. Muscat grapes, Reinette apple, citrus, exotic notes of orange and ripe mango, plus beguiling floral elderflower, bergamot, jasmine, privet and lemon balm - we are in the middle of a flower field warmed by the sun and a gentle cool breeze blows over us. Its mineral depth demands the carafe. What beauty this wine has in 2019, what intensity.
Palate
An iodine-like saltiness is released on the tongue, as if one were standing by the sea. The acidity resembles the acidity of a taut Riesling and a fine, extremely animating tannin makes itself felt in the long finish. This wine flirts with the taster, but it also grabs hold and delights with its freshness and absolutely dry structure. Wonderful food companion, very good ageing potential!
