Wine information

The Pinot Noir comes from the Hardtberg, Pfarrwingert and Burggarten sites in Ahrweiler. The sites show a mixture of greywacke and blue slate. The vines are about 25 years old. About two thirds of the grapes were destemmed. Cold maceration and spontaneous fermentation followed. The wine was mainly aged in used wood and in small parts in five-year old, medium toasted barrels made of Spessart oak from the Assmann cooperage. All grapes are harvested by hand. Chaptalisation has not been used since 2016, and a small portion of sulphur is the only thing added before bottling.

Color

medium, quite transparent ruby red

Nose

A distinct hint of gunpowder, cold smoke and damp oily slate lies over the glass and one should make the decision to treat the wine to a carafe. As the threads of smoke slowly dissipate, a slightly sweet yeasty note first emerges. Everything in the glass so far shows that this wine is still very young and needs time. Then it slowly becomes more berry-like. Sour cherries come in, red currants along with raisins, dry, freshly wet wood, and the wine finds itself more and more and makes you want to take the first sip.

Palate

On the palate the Dernau Pinot Noir then exactly the mixture of stone, red fruit, slightly rappy notes, herbal spiciness and coolness that was to be expected from the aroma. The wine appears serious, tart and genuine, taut and cool. The tannin is taut, the acidity present, lively and formative. And yet a smile flits across your mouth when you taste it; for there is already something incredibly charming. There is a delicacy in the texture, an implied sweet fruit core, a wonderful liveliness and approachability that makes the Pinot fascinating.
