The Ahr is one of the smallest and northernmost wine-growing regions in Germany. It all too often flies under the radar, is never loud, but always does what it has always done Pinot Noir. It comprises and 560 hectares of vineyards, 85% of which are planted with Pinot Noir and, despite its location north of the 50th parallel, is considered an original red wine destination. The great capital of the Ahr are the best sites between Altenahr and Marienthal, the heart of which consists of weathered slate and greywacke, some of which still have unpurified core pieces. Even if the rest of the world dreams of Burgundy as a great role model when it comes to Pinot Noir, the Ahr takes its own place on planet Pinot with its Pinot Noirs from slate and new self-confidence.
The Dernauer Spätburgunder is one of the two local wines of Bertram-Baltes. The puristic sip from the different Dernau sites of loess, loam, greywacke and slate was pressed from 100% Pinot Noir. The whole grapes are pressed and fermented in used wooden barrels made of local oak with 25% whole grapes until they are drawn off after 6 months on the fine yeast and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Ruby red with light violet reflections, transparent and clear.

The 2018 Dernauer Spätburgunder from Bertram-Baltes is still somewhat closed on the nose, the plants firmly lashed under contemporary reduction notes. After a few rounds in the decanter it shows its dark side black cherries, blackberries and raspberry outline a ripe, yet fresh fruit and are powerfully seasoned with striking aromas of juniper, allspice, pepper and Assam tea.

Gripping and juicy on the nose, it quickly builds up decent pressure on the palate. With high inner tension and full fruit ahead, it does not lose itself in contingencies, but focuses on unambiguity. Pure slate and greywacke pave its way, garnished with fruit from the wayside. Gripping tannins coat the juicy acidity, underpinned with joyful fruit in the long finish. Trend-setting style for Pinot Noir from the slate.
