Vincent Rochette's Domaine Roche-Audran is located in the Vaucluse in the middle of the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages appellation with the place name Vaison-la-Romaine. Between olive trees, lavender bushes and oak and pine forests, the vineyards of the 50-hectare domaine extend over three different terroirs: Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Vaison-la-Romaine and Visan. Around 35 hectares are used for viticulture, 5 hectares are used for olive oil production, the rest is forest. The former mixed farm is managed by the fifth generation of the Rochette family, but the domaine was only founded in 1998. With a treasure trove of vines up to 100 years old, it was a matter of course for Vincent Rochette from the very beginning to preserve this grown, unspoilt cultural landscape for future generations. The wines are cultivated according to the principles of biodynamics and are certified by Ecocert and Demeter.

The Cesar cuvée, made from 70% Grenache blanc and 30% Viognier, comes from the family vineyard on the northern slopes of the Rasteau and Cairanne hills at an altitude of 180 to 250 meters. The vineyard of just over three hectares has a northeastern and northwestern exposure and is planted with vines up to 30 years old. The soils consist of clay and limestone and are covered with the typical alluvial pebbles of the southern Rhône. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously after pressing and aged for seven to nine months in barriques and 600-litre demi-muids.

Nose

The nose is clearly anchored to the southern Rhône and entices with a wild melange of white and yellow stone fruit, fresh herbs and Mediterranean spice. White peach and currants, along with yellow apples and citrus notes, are underpinned by chervil, fennel, sage and borage. Distinctively salty notes of oyster shell and wet river pebbles complete the animatingly fresh nose.

Mouth

Juicy and buoyant, the 2019 Cuvée César from Domaine Roche-Audran shows year after year how much fun the white Rhône is. Fruity and sloppy, it cups like the finest Glou Glou without drifting into triviality. With good pressure on the palate, it combines youthful fruit with pulsating minerality and plenty of substance on the palate. The acidity is moderate, aromatically the palate complements the nose with a distinctive liquorice and fennel note, carried by Mediterranean herbal spice.
