Color:
The wine is bright ruby red with a purple rim and violet core, clear and shiny in the glass.
Nose:
Already with its first bouquet, this cuvée of Syrah and Viognier celebrates the squaring of the circle with all its corners and edges and at the same time pleasant warmth and softness. Its fragrance marries dark, earthy spice with floral aromas that soar to the heavens.
Ripe heart cherries and sloes after the first frost meet roasted purple potatoes from the wood oven, meet autumn trumpets, meet violets and peonies, meet liquorice and cubeb pepper - and simply do each other good.
Palate:
Greatness is revealed through sublimity in close connection with a good portion of thoughtfulness and modesty. The 2018 Côte-Rôtie "Les Binardes" of Maison Stephan appears with the profound power of a performance gymnast, instead of the superficial power of a muscleman. Dense, tightly meshed, yet sheer weightless tannin has a firm grip on this wine, which is completely balanced anyway - with a carefully tending hand. Moderate, yet essential acidity makes this supposed heavyweight with its 15%vol dance like Tinkerbell at her reunion with Peter Pan.
"Les Binardes" stands for great wine with immense perseverance
... and has a lot of love to give.
