Wine Description for Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru AOC 2023 by Bruno Clair

Character
The Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru ranks among the most majestic white Burgundies of all – a wine that unites power and elegance in rare balance. Bruno Clair’s version from the vintage 2023 stands for a signature that places precision above opulence: clearly defined, mineral-driven and carried by an inner tension characteristic of great white Burgundies. With 13.0% Vol. and a dry character, the wine remains vibrant and accessible despite all its depth.
Terroir & Origin
The Corton-Charlemagne lies on the upper, south-westerly and westerly exposed slopes of the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune – one of the few Grand Cru vineyard sites in Burgundy reserved exclusively for white wines. The limestone-rich, shallow soils with their high proportion of white oolitic limestone lend the wine its characteristic minerality and structure. The vintage 2023 was marked in Burgundy by warmth and early ripeness – winemakers with careful hand-harvesting and a good feel for the right harvest time were able to produce wines of remarkable freshness and complexity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Chardonnay – rooted in this vineyard site for centuries and the only conceivable expression of this terroir. Bruno Clair, whose domaine is based in Marsannay and works the entire Côte d’Or with quiet competence, practises a restrained, terroir-oriented approach. The use of wood serves integration, not dominance – the goal is always to let the wine speak, not the cellar. Typical of great Corton-Charlemagnes is a pronounced ageing potential: this wine should reach its full expression in a few years‘ time.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands dishes with substance and finesse. Recommended are roasted lobster or scallops with saffron sauce, a classic Poulet de Bresse à la crème or aged Comté. Turbot with beurre blanc also forms a timeless pairing. Those drinking the wine young should decant it generously.
