Family history of wine from the house of Nittnaus
Our journey began in 1985, inspired by classics like Bordeaux, Burgundy and Barolo, guiding us to grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to live up to our reputation worldwide. But it was our native Blaufränkisch vines in Ungerberg that inspired us to follow our own path.

The 1990 wine season brought us two unique products. One was the Cabernet Sauvignon from Edelgrund and the other the Blaufränkisch from Ungerberg. Together they created a heavenly combination that was immediately chosen to make our Comondor. With its historic name, which comes from a Hungarian shepherd dog breed, it became the showpiece of our farm.

We owe our standing as one of Austria's leading red wine producers mainly to this wine, which continuously achieves top positions at tastings both at home and abroad. Since 1998, the elegant and balanced Merlot has led the composition, supported by the Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt since 2004.

Color
Intense violet red with an almost black heart.

Smell
The Comondor from 2016 reveals itself as compact and spicy in its bouquet. Despite its maturity, it exudes a youthful character. Dark fruits such as sloe, elderberries and blackberries mingle with the aromas of green pepper, rosemary from the grill, juniper, liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee and dark tobacco, culminating in a smoky minerality. A truly profound drop.

Taste
A careful approach allows this wine to reveal all its power and complexity. Fruity notes of all kinds combine with clearly noticeable tannins and an intense minerality. Striking salt notes whet the appetite. A long finish hints at still unimagined potential for long-term ageing. For best enjoyment in its youth, the wine should be decanted at least two hours before consumption and served with opulent dishes on intense sauces.

Food recommendations
Try grilled peppers stuffed with rosemary polenta or saddle of hare with a dark chocolate sauce and truffled celery croquettes on the side. A roast wild boar with red cabbage and nut strudel also harmonises perfectly with the intense flavour of this wine.
