Tasting note from from 23.08.2021, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

For the wines of the Amphora line, Francesco Cirelli uses almost exclusively his own grape material from his Azienda Agricola in the south of the Teramo sub-region. The farm lies adjacent to the Calanchi, the limestone slopes eroded and craggy over centuries.

Cirelli concentrates on the three grape varieties of Abruzzo, Trebbiano, Pecorino and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, and produces a total of four wines from them with the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo. The grapes for the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Amphora are destemmed and gently pressed after a 24-hour maceration period in the amphora. The must is then returned to the buried amphorae where it ferments spontaneously and also undergoes BSA. The wines are given a little sulphur for stabilisation before bottling.

Nose

The 2019 Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Amphora from Francesco Cirelli initially shows its silent side on the nose, so put it in the carafe, upside down. Slowly, it tells of the formative ageing in the amphora Wet terracotta tiles and wet stones are the first impressions before further contours emerge. Herbs like sage, laurel and white pepper sketch it as a primarily earthy and spicy drink - it's not about fruit excesses here. An apricot kernel with a clear core underpins the tart symphony.

Mouth

With tremendous calm and transparency on the nose, Cirelli's Amphora has enormous depth and intensity without relying on concentration and extract. With silky tannin and stimulating tart notes, the herbal notes of the nose are reflected on the palate, the feel fine-grained like ground oyster shells. The aroma is on the saline side, and even in the drink, it does not care in the slightest about mass-compatible fruit aromas. Modern Abruzzo with self-assured standing.
