Information about wine

The Idig vineyard is the centrepiece of the Christmann winery. First mentioned in the 14th century, it is still an undivided, four-hectare monopollage. The slope falls steeply to the south-southeast and is characterised by a massive limestone subsoil and a terra fusca limestone scree layer with red sandstone scree and basalt. The Idig can certainly be counted among the few true Grand Cru sites that Germany has to offer. The Riesling was harvested between 8 and 13 September 2020. It was left on the skins for up to six hours, fermented spontaneously until 14 October and matured in large double barrels. It was bottled in July 2021.

Nose

The 2020 Idig shows itself friendly and approachable from the start with a scent of creamy pear, rock and flowers, white tea, mint and a little lemongrass. It has a calm effect with a light apple-skinned oxidation note and a little tobacco in the background.

Palate

On the palate the Idig At first finely wrought, juicy and just as joyfully approachable as in the fragrance. But after a short time it picks up speed, becomes stonier and more powerful, more complex and deeper. The soil shimmers ever more strongly through the fine fruit. Iodine is found here, salt, slightly flinty reduction notes, also some tannin. The wine builds up an impressive amount of pressure, becomes more and more mineral, but remains taut and always on the finely woven side. But there is a lot of power and substance underneath, which extends far into the long finish. One of the great wines of the vintage.
