Château Falfas

chateau de falfas falfax

Chateau de Falfas on an old print. At that time still under the name "Falfax»

The wine growing in Falfas is very old, already in 1827 a tourist guide of Bordeaux noted: "Two of the first growths of the region, Tajac and the Castle of Falfax, are located in the commune of Bayon"..

Formerly, in the 14th and 15th centuries, this beautiful estate belonged to the Lords de Lansac, an ancient sword nobility loyal to the English crown. At that time, the wines were exported to the court of Edward of England

In the 17th century, the château was acquired by the Sires de Riveaux, who bequeathed the present building in pure Louis XIII style.

At the end of the 17th century, the castle became the property of the President of the Parliament of Guyenne, Gaillard de Falfas, who had it restored and gave it its present name.

Since 2010, Véronique has been cultivating and vinifying the wines with the support of her team: Driss, Christophe, Pascal and Stéphanie and her two daughters Annabelle and Suzanne.

More about Château Falfas

Vineyard and terroir

The 20 hectares of vineyard are located on the southern slopes of the right bank of the Gironde, in this beautiful region nicknamed the "Little Switzerland of the Gironde wears.

Merlot, Cabernet and Malbec are planted on a clay-limestone soil in which the vines are deeply rooted. The terroir of Falfas consists of asteric limestone, recognized as one of the best for the vine.

The mild climate, favoured by the proximity of the Gironde, allows the grapes to reach full maturity in ideal conditions. Limited yields, manual harvesting, selection of grapes at the peak of their ripeness, long and careful vinification, ageing in French oak barrels... all these measures guarantee impeccable quality and a long shelf life in the bottle.

Falfas has been a renowned wine for over 400 years, its wines exported with privilege to the court of Edward of England.

Biodynamics

So says the winemaker: I experienced biodynamics as a child, being the daughter of biodynamic winegrowers (my father, François Bouchet, see his book published in 2003: 50 years of practice and teaching of biodynamic agriculture as applied in the vineyard). It is an exceptional tool for quality that respects the entire agricultural cultural landscape, a truly sustainable agriculture. This agriculture of today and tomorrow allows to act in the respect and in the sense of the energies of the living environment, the plant, the soil and all their surroundings. It brings to the wines a minerality, the imprint of the place, a balance, a harmony, freshness. The wine is more digestible, with the enhancement of each vintage in its particular quality. The best wines are not made, they are aged. The art of the winemaker is essentially to let the richness of his vineyard express itself naturally through its fruit. The key is therefore the grape, which must be the pure reflection of the typicality of its unique terroir. Biodynamic farming allows me to extract the quintessence of the fruit to obtain a wine with a rich and generous character that is a real pleasure to drink."

Made from these robust and healthy grapes, Falfas wines are therefore a pure reflection of the typicality of the terroir, without any external influence.
The hand harvest at the highest degree of ripeness of the grapes, the subsequent vinification with indigenous yeasts and the careful maturation ensure quality and an excellent development in the bottle over many years.

Since the end of 1988, the entire vineyard of Falfas is farmed biodynamically, an agriculture that protects the environment by respecting the plant, nature and... the consumer!

Today, very prestigious wines such as Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Château Pontet-Canet, La Coulée de Serrant, Domaine Zind-HumbrechtDomaine Leflaive or Chapoutier have converted to biodynamic cultivation, confirming the great interest in this practice.
