Cherry liqueur and black cherries combine with a little cinnamon, liquorice and star anise, pepper and violet notes of violets and lavender. Acidity and minerality provide vibrant liveliness and freshness despite all the power this concentrated wine carries.

Wine information

The 2016 Pibarnon Bandol Rouge is a cuvée of 90 % Mourvèdre and 10 % Grenache. The vines are planted in an "amphitheatre" facing the sea on Triassic clay, limestone and chalk. For this vin de guard only the best and oldest vines are used at an average altitude of 250 meters. The fermentation lasts about three weeks. Then the wines are aged plot by plot in matched barriques, tonneaux and barrels of different provenance for 20 months.

Color

intense purple red with violet reflections

Nose

The Bandol Rouge delivers all the independence that one hopes for from an almost single-varietal Mourvèdre. The Grenache share simply serves to direct the wine a little earlier into the silky direction than would be possible with the single-varietal Mourvèdre. On the nose the wine is earthy, yes, it smells of dry as well as slightly damp earth including undergrowth, wild strawberries, blackberries and a little plum cake, juniper, sloe and smoke. At some point a cool note of crushed lime mixes in here and also a little blood orange.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is as powerful as it is dense and silky. It is impressive how open the 2016 already seems after a period of air contact. Cherry liqueur and black cherries combine with a little cinnamon, licorice and star anise, pepper and violet notes of violets and lavender. Acidity and minerality provide vibrant liveliness and freshness despite all the power this concentrated wine carries. The tannin is still quite robust, but smooths out with time and air in the glass. The potential of this wine is easily 15 to 20 years.
