Tasting note from from 23.08.2021, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Grown on the chalky and slatey eastern slopes of the Leithagebirge, this Chardonnay comes from the sites Spiegel, Kirchberg and Alter Berg in Winden as well as Fügler in Jois. Grapes from the Edelgraben and Zwergsbreiten vineyards in Breitenbrunn are also included in the cuvée. Harvested by hand at the beginning of September, the grapes lie on the mash for a few hours before the must is spontaneously fermented. The BSA also takes place spontaneously during the 17-month ageing on the lees in large wooden barrels.

Color

Strong old gold with a slight onion skin tinge.

Nose

The 2019 Chardonnay from Heike and Gernot Heinrich shows baroque splendour on the nose. Honey, dried apricots and acacia make the fruit-pulsive start, before this expansively lush splendour shifts into spiciness and light tobacco along with delicately smoky notes, toasted oyster shells and dried flowers take the lead.

Mouth

On the nose, the wine shows enormous calmness and balance on the palate. With fine extract and profound depth, it is more about structure than fruit. The texture is reminiscent of fine green tea; aromatically, notes of camomile and herbal tea appear alongside phenolic aromas of pome fruit peel. Underpinned by vital acidity, the wine benefits from sufficient aeration, but even more from at least three years of bottle ageing.
