Wine information

The Grand Cru site Clos du Roi is very close to the Corton Charlemagne. It lies high up on the hill, is steep and characterised by clay and limestone marl with a little sand in the topsoil. The grapes ripen slowly and late, but the soil has very good drainage, so there is no waterlogging even in the late stages of ripening. The estate covers 0.38 hectares. Planted in 1961 and 1985, the Pinot noir was fermented spontaneously in the wood cuve with 100 % of whole grapes, then gravity fed into the barriques and tonneaux with a small amount of new wood. This was followed by around 14 months of ageing without further agitation. Filling was mostly directly from the barrel with minimal sulphur.

Nose

The 2019 Corton-Clos-du-Roi is a Corton in the making, combining floral scents with a remarkable spiciness. The attack is reminiscent of fresh and candied rose petals and blue flowers. Behind it are warm raspberries, some cherries, some undergrowth and a hint of black tea, clove, ripe raisins and a slightly petrol-like reduction note.

Mouth

On the palate the grand cru In the first moment surprisingly open and extremely charming with a wonderful melting. It is juicy and fleshy with a ripe dark fruit. Blackcurrants, blueberries, a little pepper, liquorice and olive can be tasted here. There are also notes of ripe raisins, a smooth tannin and a precise acidity. Towards the finish, the wine becomes increasingly punchy, spicy, tart, demanding, powerful and also expressive. This is a wine with a wonderful texture, a deep, still undeveloped minerality and a character that is already clearly recognisable now, but which still needs to mature.
