Wine information
2016 was a very challenging year for Jean-Louis Trapet and thus the exact opposite of 2015. The frost had struck, and massively so. Jean-Louis' father had not seen such frost damage in 50 years. Then mildew came and ravaged especially the vines damaged by the frost. However, with an extreme amount of work, the Trapets were then able to harvest a perfect vintage, albeit a very small one. They harvested small but perfectly ripened berries from 26 September. In 2016, about 40 % whole clusters were in fermentation - about half of 2015.
Color
dark cherry-red
Nose
The 2016 Chambertin Grand Cru combines a dark spice of forest floor, undergrowth and dark spice tobacco reminiscent of Syrian Latakia with notes of pastry with sugared raspberries. The fruit is less in the foreground here than the deep spice aroma and the wood, which however does not remind of toasted barrels but much more of old wood, which gives off a special scent when it is wetted after a long time.
Palate
On the palate the 2016 Grand Cru already surprisingly open, soft and creamy, even a little lactic in the first minutes. But then the spicy notes gain the upper hand, the wine gains momentum, the power of the site becomes more obvious. Here, too, you'll find a lot of tobacco, though it's no longer just Latakia, but already lighter varieties, too. In addition, one finds a little Madagascar vanilla and an intense dark cherry fruit. All this is on a bed of crushed stone and dry earth. Of course, the wine is still young and needs many more years of development. But already it gives a lot of pleasure.
