Case Old

The Case Alte winery is located in the west of the island of Sicily, near Palermo. The name resembles the elevation there. Accordingly, it should not be confused with the style of Etna. The gently rolling hills there have an identity all their own. The loamy, sandy soils nevertheless make it to a level of up to 500 metres of elevation.

casea alte la familia

The Vaccaro family, with Giuseppe, currently represents the third generation of this family business. Successive growth has brought the winery from the grandfather's beginnings to the present. For the most part, they cultivate the autochthonous grape varieties of Sicily: Grillo, Catarratto, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d'Avola. Syrah was also planted there at the turn of the millennium, as is very typical for that time.

The varietal wines wonderfully reflect the strengths of the island of Sicily. High aroma diversity, structure, Mediterranean flair and yet wines with drinking flow. No wonder that this success story of Sicilian wines does not seem to stop. 4 filari Grillo and 12 filari Catarratto are matured in steel tanks. They stand for freshness and high varietal typicity. The 16 filari Nero d'Avola is macerated on the grape skins for up to twelve days. The fermentation also takes place in steel tanks to tease out and promote the fruit. The wine then matures for eight months in French oak barrels.

The quintessence

Since the construction of the new winery in 2010, the course has been set for careful, ecological viticulture. The work processes flow perfectly into each other. Respect for the achievements of previous generations is always mentioned.

The Syrah di Macellarotto is the quintessence of what they do. A wine full of rich, dense fruit and spice that, after one year of ageing in wooden barrels, is allowed to mature in the bottle for another year before it appears on the market.
