The Pranzegg winery is named after the estate where Martin Gojer has been producing his wines since 2009 as a reflection of their origin, the vintage and the family's way of life. Above the Bolzano valley basin, Gojer's vineyards are farmed biodynamically by hand, and in the cellar, too, less is more Long fermentation and long maturation periods on the full lees with the addition of only small amounts of sulphur characterise the wines, which are always bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The proportions of the varieties used in the Cuvée Caroline vary from year to year. The 2018 cuvée consists of Sauvignon, Chardonnay as well as Viognier and Manzoni bianco. The grapes were crushed together and lay on their skins for six days with a proportion of around 60% combs. After racking, the Caroline went into the barrels where it lay on its full lees for a year before being placed in concrete for another ten months before the new harvest.

Color

Golden yellow with a silky sheen.

Nose

The 2018 Caroline von Pranzegg is peppery and green on the nose, reflecting this year's high proportion of Sauvignon, as a Chardonnay vineyard had been damaged in August. Nettles, gooseberries and white pepper are spicily underpinned by citrusy notes of dried orange and sandalwood. Mild spices in the top note outline the distinctive side of this expansively aromatic wine, whose nose is in constant flux with increasing aeration.

Mouth

Gripping with a grippy feel and chewy tannins on the palate, the direction of travel is directly set. This is not about primary fruit, but about feel, extract and texture. The ripe fruit alternates between yellow and green, always balanced by a spicy note. The ripe tannins contour it aromatically tart on the palate and the acidity gives it a racy pace. Ethereally cool notes in the long finish give it a certain weightlessness within the framework of its juicy extract and grippy texture.
