Calafata is not just a winery. In terms of wine, it should rather be called a cooperative. It is a social project and a catch basin for the socially disadvantaged or marginalized. Thus, one can also expect political statements here. On the back label as well as on the cork you can find "make wine not war" and "in ground we trust". Clear statements. Besides wine, they are also dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables and olives.

Iarséra 2019 is a single varietal Sangiovese grosso.

Bright ruby red, violet reflections, light rim

Iarséra 2019 combines intense fruit with abundant spice and dark components. Sloe, fig and mulberry order a dense field of fruit notes alongside morello cherry and plum. A little almond and hazelnut provide appropriate spice. Violets and hibiscus set off gentle, mellowing scent marks. On the other hand, dark aromas of juniper, black pepper and nutmeg reveal themselves. A little car tyre and tar are present and fit surprisingly well into the picture. Delicately smoky notes as well as redcurrant bush wood set the final act of the nose.

From the first sip, it absolutely fulfils the expectations gained. The Sangiovese presents itself filigree and radiating coolness. This silky robe suits it particularly well. The fruit flows into an enormously fine jet that hits the palate purposefully. The acid structure is pro-active and leads it forward in the mouth. This results in a certain astringency that is very conducive to drinking. This Sangiovese exhibits a positive uncomplicatedness without seeming simple. Quite the opposite! For all its finesse, it appears profound and serious. Fruit and spice reappear in a reduced form in the aftertaste. Wet stones, white pepper and a little spray dominate.
