Info

Calafata is not just a winery. In terms of wine, it should rather be called a cooperative. It is a social project and a catch basin for the socially disadvantaged or marginalized. Thus, one can also expect political statements here. On the back label as well as on the cork you can find "make wine not war" and "in ground we trust". Clear statements. Besides wine, they are also dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables and olives.

The 2019 Almare is based on Trebbiano. As "trebbiano macerado" declared this is an orange wine. Mash and must are fermented together in tanks and used barrique barrels. The must is treated gently to keep the extraction and thus the release of tannin low.

Color

Sparkling golden yellow, orange reflections

Nose

2019 Almare loudly exudes a multitude of aromas. Discreetly and very successfully, the nose also indicates its style. The previous vintage was much rougher and more rustic. It seems as if the balance has been found in this wine. Calm and tidy at the same time. Aromatically, it is reminiscent of orange and camomile blossom. Orange peel, a little grapefruit and bergamot also provide clear aromas. Forest honey and concentrated local fruits are in no way inferior. Apricot, mirabelle, yellow apples and quince appear in great variety dried, caramelised and baked. Dried herbs like marjoram and thyme are present in the background. Green walnuts finally round it off.

Palate

On the palate, it is sensationally good and harmonious. Crisp and characterised by a fine tannin. It is both slender and juicy at the same time. With a narrow 11.5% by volume, there is no obstacle to higher consumption and good drinking flow. It comes across as light-footed, absolutely dry and characterised by pleasant tart nuances. The bitter component is totally appetising and animates the drinking flow. The acidity is restrained, but this does not detract from the drinking flow. The aromas of the nose are complemented by saffron and turmeric. On the nutty side, almonds and hazelnuts join the walnuts.
